About me

I am a guitar instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience and hold a Bachelor of Music in Popular Music with an emphasis in Guitar, which I earned in 2018. My background combines formal musical training, live performance, and extensive teaching experience with students of all ages and skill levels.

During my university years in the Philippines, I performed in numerous university concerts and events as both a classical guitarist in guitar ensembles and an electric lead guitarist in rock concerts. These experiences strengthened my musicianship and continue to influence my practical, performance-oriented approach to teaching.

I began teaching guitar in 2016 through face-to-face lessons before transitioning to online instruction in 2020. Over the years, I have taught at Lea de Castro Music Studio (Philippines, 2016–2018), Melodica Music Center (Dubai, UAE, 2018–2019), Buddy's Institute (Dubai, UAE, 2019–2020), The Beat Music Academy (Dubai, UAE, 2020–2022), Soul Sound of Music (Philippines, 2024–2025), and currently teach students worldwide through Preply (2025–Present).

I teach classical guitar, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele to children, teenagers, and adults, from complete beginners to advanced musicians. I have also prepared students for internationally recognized ABRSM and Trinity examinations, with many achieving excellent results.

My teaching style is structured, patient, and personalized. Whether your goal is to build a strong technical foundation, prepare for graded examinations, improve your musicianship, perform confidently, or simply play your favorite songs, I tailor every lesson to your individual goals, learning style, and pace, helping you make steady and enjoyable progress.

Teaching style

  • Goal-driven lesson plans tailored to each student
  • Balance of technique, theory, and the songs you actually want to play
  • Recorded recap notes after every lesson so practice is easy

"John isn't only a great teacher but an amazing person as well. His teaching method will be structured based on your skill level, whether that be a beginner or intermediate. He makes his lessons fun and engaging by working with songs that you would actually enjoy. He's very encouraging when you make mistakes and would give a very positive feedback. He's also a very understanding person when it comes to missed classes or sudden cancellations. Overall, he's such a warm person to work with. The money you will spend is all going to be worth it."

"John has a wide repertoire to teach. Just a within a few lessons, I was introduced pieces from classical music to pop hits. John is flexible with his teaching style - my focus was to learn fundamental techniques beyond strumming chords and provided live feedback as well as PDF material for me to reference outside of lessons. I recommend John to any any, especially beginners!"

"I’ve been taking Ukulele lessons with Mark, and so far it has been really fun. He is very talented as a musician, and as a tutor he is friendly and supportive. The lessons usually include going over techniques and drills from a book while using a metronome, as well as learning / practicing new songs that interest me. Mark is very adaptive to skill level and strives to keep the lesson pace engaging. He has also been very accommodating to me as someone with a busy schedule. He is a great tutor, would recommend to beginners, and those looking to refine old skills. 😊"

"John Mark is an awesome guitar teacher, really patient and easy to learn from. He’s super skilled with classical guitar and knows music theory inside out. He breaks things down so they actually make sense, and lessons never feel rushed. I’ve improved a ton thanks to him and couldn’t recommend him more."
